Riding India's E-Cycle Boom

Hey there!
Itβs Sparsh here!π
This week we're staying close to home (well, close to Pune) for a startup that's trying to do something almost nobody in India has pulled off: build an e-cycle from scratch, in-house, battery to bike. π
Let's dig into EMotorad, the e-bike maker betting that owning the entire supply chain beats importing it. π
Table of Contents
CONTEXT
πSetting the Stage

India's e-bike market was valued at $1.42 billion in 2025 and is projected to hit $3.0 billion by 2034, growing at an 8.69% CAGR. π
Pedal-assisted e-bikes (the kind EMotorad builds) dominate with 82% of the market, since they combine exercise with motor assist instead of replacing it. π΄
Almost 99% of the world procures e-bikes from China, and that is what they aim to change. It's a $40 billion industry internationally. And EMotorad is trying to make a dent in that. π
Meanwhile, the delivery and last-mile segment is the fastest-growing use case, with the electric cargo bike market alone set to grow from $148 million in 2022 to $761 million by 2032. π¦
India still accounts for only about 1% of global e-bike revenue today, government incentives on battery imports and local manufacturing are trying to change that math. π

β‘Quick Take

π Behind the Strategy
π€Whatβs Exciting?
π Market whitespace: India is still just 1% of global e-bike revenue, but growing at nearly 9% a year with government backing on local battery manufacturing. There's a lot of runway before this hits a ceiling. π£οΈ
π A genuine manufacturing moat: Building all five core components in-house isn't easy to copy quickly, and it's the kind of capital and engineering investment most competitors have skipped in favor of assembly-only models.
π Exports already work: Unlike most Indian mobility startups that stay domestic, EMotorad already sells into 58 countries and goes head-to-head with Rad Power Bikes, Lectric, and Cowboy abroad.
π€Whatβs Risky?
π Losses are growing faster than revenue: EMotorad's EBITDA loss roughly tripled in FY24 even as revenue grew 17%, pushing its margin from -7% to -19%. Manufacturing at scale isn't cheap, and profitability keeps sliding further away. πΈ
βοΈ Trade policy exposure: A meaningful share of revenue comes from exports into the US and Europe, markets where tariffs and anti-dumping rules can shift with little warning.
ποΈ Capital intensity: Hitting the gigafactory's 500,000-unit target means continuous capital for inventory, working capital, and further plant buildout. Growth here is bought, not organic.
This is a company betting that owning the entire e-bike supply chain, not just the brand, is worth the capital burn. If EMotorad can turn its manufacturing scale into actual margin, it has a real shot at becoming India's answer to the Chinese e-bike supply chain. But right now, it's spending faster than it's earning to get there. π‘
π― Competitor Analysis

β‘οΈ The honest takeaway: most Indian e-cycle brands are assemblers competing on price. EMotorad's real competition isn't another Indian startup, it's China's supply chain dominance itself.
